This project focused on creating an interactive installation where users engaged with the concept through tangible interaction. Developed as a group during a month-long intensive course, the installation—from brainstorming to exhibition—was completed in three weeks.
The concept aimed to amplify the user’s impact through immersive design, using light, touch, and sound. The centerpiece was a starry sky with a supernova at its heart: when touched, it would extinguish surrounding stars and transform into a red dwarf, before gradually recharging and becoming ready to be touched again.
about
The challenge was to distill the complexities inherent in the concept into a simple installation, while also addressing technical considerations such as guiding participants to interact with the supernova without explicit guidance.
Challenge
We wished that participants would leave the installation with an impression and recognize the importance of their own influence.
Goal
THE PrOCESS
Mind mapping of some of the early concepts.
The project was planned with a one-week conceptualization phase, involving extensive group discussions and experimentation with low-fidelity prototypes.
After settling on the idea of a supernova, we dedicated the next two-weeks to preparing the technical aspects of our installation.

We kept reaching for the stars!
Then Stellar Impact said “Let there be light”.
My primary task in this project was to design and create the Supernova. My goal was to craft a shape that could convey more than just a star, evoking a sense of presence. Simultaneously, the design had to be inviting and robust for participants to feel comfortable interacting with it.
The file was created in Adobe Illustrator, before being laser-cut in acrylic sheets.
The Supernova constructed, and in the process of being installed in the exhibition.
the exhibition
The exhibition lasted for two hours, and we limited the space for only six people at a time.
We were also accompanied with two other exhibitions by different groups, held in separate rooms- and together we achieved a record number of visitors since the course was established!
Fun fact (or maybe not so fun):
We dismantled the entire installation down to its bare bones just one hour after the exhibition ended.
reflections and takways
To communicate a concept simply to participants requires difficult and challenging background work.
I also gained experience with new tools like 3D printing and laser-cutting, marking my first project in tangible interaction.
